Poggiardo territory was already inhabited by the Messapian. Later the Byzantine settled here as shown by the various caves that can be found in the area around the town.
Among the places to visit one should single out the Mother Church of Poggiardo, a Rococo building with an elaborated facade made in 1728, the Ducal Palace belonged to the Guarini family, the Sedile and bell-tower built in 1800.
Villa Episcopio houses the Crypt Museum with fragments of some interesting frescoes dating back to the XII century onwards previously located inside the Crypt of Santo Stefano.
Nearby Poggiardo the remains of the ancient Messapian centre Vaste can be seen.
