In ancient times Galatina was an important centre of the Salento area. During the Middle Ages the town was embellished with many Baroque churches and noble residences.
Inside the main square of Galatina there is the Church of San Peter and Paul, built between 1633 and 1663 in Baroque style by one of the most famous Baroque artist of the period called Giuseppe Zimbalo.
The most important monument in Galatina is the Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. It was built between 1384 and 1391 and it is one of the rare examples of Gothic architecture in Salento. Its facade has three finely carved portals with, the central one, surmounted by a nice rose window. Inside, there are some beautiful frescos depicting saints from the Old and New Testaments.
Among noble residences to mention the palazzo Vernaleone, Palazzo Galluccio-Mezio, Palazzo Venturi and Palazzo Gorgoni.
