Casarano, located south-west of Lecce, is a town of Roman origin, probably founded by the centurion Caesar. Between the V and XI century the Byzantine settled here, later the town was conquered by the Normans, the Swabian and the Venetians.
On the road to Melissano stands the Church of Santa Maria della Croce of Casaranello, one of the oldest Christians churches of the world containing mosaics of the V century and frescoes of the Byzantine period.
Outside Casarano the crypt of Santa Costantina has some interesting frescoes of the XVI and XVII centuries.
