Bari is a modern metropolis with one of the most important ports in south Italy. The historic centre of Bari grew up on a small limestone promontory, stretching out into the Adriatic sea. This promontory was chosen by prehistoric peoples as the location for the village whose remains have been unearthed during recent excavations.
The main monument of Bari is without any doubt the Basilica of San Nicola, one of the most splendid examples of Romanesque architecture with a facade made up of spotless white limestone blocks set off by two bell-towers.
