Regional nature reserve of Palude del Conte e Duna Costiera

The park

The Regional nature reserve of Palude del Conte and Duna Costiera was created by the town of Porto Cesareo and classified by the EU as one of the endangered habitats and, therefore, worthy of preservation.

Here, there are different habitats with different vegetation. Inside the sandy dune area there are shrubs and juniper trees; the area of the marshes is filled with steppes, Mediterranean vegetation, aquatic and marsh orchids.

Just around the area of coastal dunes are sinkholes called doline, which are natural cavities of the karst terrain of the area. These are circular in shape and of a varying depth.

Along the sandy dunes there are many juniper trees, while the area behind the dunes is characterized by reeds and salicornia.

The wildlife in this area include the kingfisher, the tufetto and the Cetti's warbler.
