Regional nature reserve Bosco delle Pianelle
The park
The Regional nature reserve Bosco delle Pianelle is an area rich in caves, located on the Murge hills along the slopes of the Gravina delle Pianelle, which also includes Monte Fellone and Specchia Taranto.
It is woodland full of fragno, holm and oak trees. There are also rare plants like peonies, hornbeam and wild orchids. Other species found in the reserve are the strawberry tree, hawthorn, mastic, elm and wild pear trees.
Among the mammals found here foxes, badgers, weasels, squirrels, hares, hedgehogs, wild boars and wild rabbits. Birds that can be seen include lapwings, quails, pheasants, magpies and woodpeckers. Also nocturnal birds such as the owls and the barn owls.
Bosco delle Pianelle offers various excursions to explore the reserve like cycle-hiking, cycle-walking, walking and riding.
