Ionian Coast
The Ionian coast is entirely covered in pine woods and while these forest have succeeded in cutting off the progress of the sand, they have not prevented the level area near the sea from remaining abandoned for hundred of years.
In past centuries the population of this area have moved, persecuted by the pirates disseminating fear and death, to location more inland. Here thay could build cities and protect themselves from invaders.
Nowadays the cost has changed remarkably. Among the vast pine of woods, which stretches almost as far as the line of the sea, a series of now famous sea resorts such as Castellaneta Marina, Ginosa Marina and Lido Silvana which is one of the most beautiful of the eastern Ionian coast. Its limpid sea and dense wood have made it one of the biggest tourist attractions of the area.
Porto Cesareo coast is today an important seaside resort with holiday villages, camping sites and hotels that streches from the confimes of the province of Taranto as far as Punta Prosciutto, Torre Lapillo, Torre Chianca and Torre S. Isodoro.
