Grottoes of Castellana
The Grottoes of Castellana are located near the town of Castellana from which they take their name. They are the best known speleological caves in the whole Italy and one of the Apulian main attractions.
The grottoes were explored for the first time in 1938 although it was already known that they existed back in the XVIII century. There different cases each one with its own name such as the Nera, Cavernone dei Monumenti and della Civetta and the most wonderful the grotta Bianca.
They consists of a series of underground caves formed by rainwater collected at surface level and easily penetrated the crevices in the limestone layer. The course of this water created tunnels, stalactites and stalagmites in great number giving the grottoes a breathtaking sight.
The caves are open to public and a tour of about 3 km takes almost two hours.
