Tarantino IGT area, identified as the territory of Taranto, includes the south part of the hills of Murgia down to the Ionian coast. It is mainly a flat area with just few low hills on the northern part.
The climate is of the Mediterranean type with mild winter temperatures, due to the proximity of the sea, and hot long summer.
The centre of the wine culture of Tarantino IGT area is the territory of Manduria, famous for the most distinctive grape of the area, the Primitivo, an early ripening grape vine that produces wines of excellent alcohol content. There are also other important vine grapes such as the Negroamaro and Verdeca.
Among the main wines of this area to remember the DOCG Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale, also DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) such as Primitivo di Manduria, Lizzano, Terra d'Otranto, Colline Ioniche Tarantine, Negroamaro di Terra d'Otranto.
The Tarantino Protected Geographical Indication territory is reserved for wines produced in the area in the version of frizzante, passito, sparkling red, sparkling and novello rosé.
